About / Description
Meth lab cleanup is the most common term that’s used for drug manufacturing lab, probably because it’s the most common drug to be manufactured in a private home setting. For every pound of meth that’s manufactured or “cooked” there is 5 to 7 pounds of chemical waste left behind. This chemical waste is considered a bio hazardous waste. Meth is manufactured using very toxic chemicals that can be dangerous if inhaled or come into contact with your skin. Meth is often manufactured in homemade laboratories, such as rented homes, hotel rooms or apartments. These active labs should never be entered for risk of contact exposure and have a high risk of fire and explosion.
Symptoms
Meth lab manufacturing has a very distinct odor that smells like urine, there may be empty packaging of solvents, such as methanol, benzene and methylene chloride just to name a few. The people that manufacture the meth usually take the drugs also. This drug has the ability to give a person high energy and slurred, but rapid speech and it’s common for a person to be able to stay up for days and then to come down and sleep for days. The property that has a meth lab in it would have to undergo a very extensive restoration process to rid the premises of the highly toxic chemicals.
Causes
The contamination from the meth lab chemicals even after the manufacture process absorb into the carpeting, drywall and ceiling tiles. The curtains and furniture may also become contaminated from chemical residue and vapors. The plumbing drains may need to have the chemicals that were poured into the drains neutralized. The outdoor disposal area will more than likely need to be de-contaminated from spilled chemicals.
Procedure / Solutions
Once the meth lab is discovered and law enforcement seize the lab and make the arrest. The next step is, the hazardous chemicals and evidence are removed by chemical hazard consultants and officials my need to screen the indoor air. When the meth lab seized property has been released back to the owner, a certified Safedry referred technician will be dispatched and begin to disinfect and de-contaminate the entire crime scene and the property may need to be “aired out” from 3 to 5 days. Because meth can be made using different recipes, every meth lab cleanup is different, because there will be different chemicals being used. Depending on the size of the meth lab, some cleanups are very small, a minor cleaning and some paint. Other times when the contamination is so extensive that the inside of the building needs a complete restoration and some cases are so severe that the building becomes condemned and had to be demolished and the groundwater and soil need to be cleaned up because of how and where the chemical waste were disposed.
Cost
The cost of a meth lab cleanup would depend on the amount of area that would have to be cleaned, the type of chemicals that were used and the extent of exposure that the property had endured. The Safedry team members have also been trained to provide the most accurate and detailed proposals and competitive estimates.
